Interior cleaning — mats, seat belts, windows and leather
How to clean the cabin safely: dashboard, floor mats, seat belts, the heated rear window and leather upholstery.
Interior cleaning — mats, seat belts, windows and leather
General rules
- When washing the interior, do not let water splash directly onto the dashboard or floor — it can cause electrical short circuits.
- Do not use organic substances (solvents, kerosene, spirit, petrol and so on) or acid or alkali solutions for cleaning — they can discolour, dull or peel the surfaces.
- If you use a new cleaning fluid, check that it does not contain these ingredients and keep it off interior surfaces. If anything spills, remove it immediately.
Panels and displays
Wipe the air-conditioning panel, speakers, dashboard, controls and switches with a damp, soft cloth. Remove dust with a clean soft cloth dipped in warm water.
Floor mats
- Vacuum to remove as much dust as possible, then clean the mats with a good foaming cleaner; work the foam in with a sponge or brush in circular motions.
- Do not use plain water for cleaning, and keep the mats as dry as possible.
Seat belts
- Clean them with a neutral soap solution or warm water, wiping with a sponge or soft cloth.
- Check the belts for excessive wear, fraying and cuts.
- Do not use dyes or bleach — they can weaken the belts. Do not use the belts until they are dry.
Doors and windows
- Doors and windows can be washed with any ordinary cleaner.
- Wipe the inside of the rear window gently in a horizontal (left–right) direction — too much pressure or wiping up and down can damage the heating wires and the antenna.
- Check the door mechanisms regularly; if dust has built up, wipe it off with a damp soft cloth.
Leather upholstery
- Clean leather with a neutral wool detergent; wipe dust off with a soft cloth and solution, then remove the residue with a clean damp cloth.
- If the leather is wet, wipe it with a clean soft cloth and let it dry in a cool, airy place.
- Do not clean leather with organic substances (essential oils, alcohol, petrol, acids, alkalis) — it can change colour. Do not use a nylon brush or synthetic-fibre cloth, which scratches the fine grain.
- Mould can grow on dirty leather — pay particular attention to oil stains; the upholstery should always be clean.
- Long exposure to the sun can harden or shrink leather, so park in shade and a cool place, especially in summer. In hot weather do not leave vinyl or paraffin items on the upholstery — they can stick to it.
