BYD Han EV maintenance schedule: what to service and when

BYD's service plan for the Han EV in one place: fluids, battery checks, the cabin filter and the parts with a fixed lifetime — with intervals, fluid specifications and capacities.

An electric Han has no engine oil, spark plugs or timing belt to look after, but it is not maintenance-free. BYD's schedule for the Han EV runs in steps of 12,000 km or 6 months up to 192,000 km / 96 months, and concentrates on the coolants, brake fluid, transmission oil, the high-voltage traction battery and a few parts with a fixed service life. Every item has its own article.

Service intervals

ItemInterval (whichever comes first)
Battery coolantevery 2 years or 40,000 km
Motor coolantevery 4 years or 100,000 km (long-life organic-acid coolant)
Brake fluidevery 2 years or 40,000 km
Battery capacity test and calibrationevery 6 months or 72,000 km
Transmission oilfirst change at 24 months or 40,000 km, then every 24 months or 48,000 km
Cabin air filterat every service visit (every 12,000 km / 6 months)
SRS module, ECUs and sensorsreplace once every 10 years

Looking after the traction battery

BYD notes that to keep the battery in the best possible condition the car should be fully charged and fully discharged at regular intervals — at least every 6 months or 72,000 km, whichever comes first — so the battery management system can recalibrate itself. See the article on the capacity test and calibration for details.

Fluids and capacities

FluidSpecificationAmount
Transmission oilNT33 Shell S3 ATF-MD30.85 ± 0.1 L; 0.95 ± 0.1 L; 0.8 ± 0.05 L (three values listed in the sheet without labels)
Battery coolantfreezing point −40 °C5.9 L
Motor coolantlong-life anticorrosive coolant, −40 °C6.43 L (two-wheel drive); 9.7 L (four-wheel drive)
Brake fluidHZY6 (DOT 4)1.13 ± 0.2 L (two-wheel drive); 1.15 ± 0.2 L (four-wheel drive)

BYD's sheet does not say which variant each of the three transmission-oil amounts belongs to — confirm the exact amount and variant by VIN at the workshop.

Severe operating conditions

If the car is used under one or more of the conditions below, some service items need to be done more often:

  • driving on rough, muddy or snow-melt-covered roads;
  • driving on dusty roads;
  • towing, or driving with a caravan or roof rack;
  • frequent short trips (within 8 km) when the outside temperature is below zero;
  • long periods of idling and/or a lot of low-speed driving over long distances, for example taxi use.

The schedule does not give shortened intervals for these conditions — ask an authorised service or your workshop.

Scope

This schedule covers the electric (EV) versions. The plug-in hybrid (DM-i) versions have a different service plan, which is not covered here.
