BYD Han EV: replacing the battery coolant

Every 2 years or 40,000 km — the fluid in the traction battery's own cooling circuit. Interval, amount and what to watch for.

BYD replaces the battery coolant on the Han EV every 2 years or every 40,000 km, whichever comes first. In the schedule this is a separate line from the electric-motor coolant, so the two fluids have different deadlines.

Key data

  • Interval: 2 years or 40,000 km (whichever comes first).
  • Amount: 5.9 L.
  • Coolant freezing point: −40 °C.

Why it matters

The cooling circuit keeps the cells in their recommended temperature range while driving and during fast charging. Over time the additives in the coolant are used up, which is why the manufacturer sets a calendar limit next to the mileage — the coolant needs changing even if the car covers few kilometres.

What to watch for

  • The battery circuit sits next to high-voltage components — the job should be done by a workshop trained for HV vehicles.
  • Do not top up with a random “universal” coolant; use a fluid that meets BYD's specification.
  • Under severe operating conditions (taxi use, towing) ask the workshop about a shorter interval.
