Corteco: Freudenberg's Aftermarket Sealing and Filtration Brand
Corteco is the independent-aftermarket sealing, mounting and filtration brand of the German Freudenberg Group, formed in 1996 out of a sealing-parts business whose Italian roots go back to 1925.
History
Corteco's history traces back to 1925, when Corte & Cosso Inc. was founded in Turin, Italy, in collaboration with the German inventor Carl Freudenberg. Freudenberg's own company history is far older still, with roots going back to a tannery founded in 1849 in Weinheim, Germany, and a landmark automotive invention in 1929, when Freudenberg developed the Simmerring, one of the first practical radial shaft seals and a product still sold today. The Italian business was renamed Corteco in the 1990s, and in 1996 Freudenberg Sealing Technologies formally established Corteco as its dedicated brand for the independent automotive aftermarket, with branches built up across Italy, Germany and the UK. Freudenberg itself remains a privately held, family-controlled German industrial group with a wide portfolio of sealing, filtration and other technologies, of which Corteco is the aftermarket-facing arm; a sister brand, Dichtomatik, covers industrial (non-automotive) sealing distribution.
What they make
Corteco's catalogue spans three main product areas. The largest is sealing technology: oil seals, gaskets, transmission seals, valve-stem seals, brake hoses and sealing kits designed to keep engine, transmission and axle fluids contained. The second is vibration control: engine mounts, suspension mounts, bushings and other rubber-to-metal components that isolate noise and vibration from the vehicle body. The third is filtration, sold under the micronAir sub-brand, covering cabin air filters and engine intake air filters. Altogether Corteco lists more than 26,000 part numbers across these categories, aimed at covering both mainstream and less common vehicle applications for independent workshops.
Where they fit — OE vs aftermarket
Corteco is explicitly positioned as an aftermarket brand rather than an OE-facing one: its components are manufactured to the same engineering standards as Freudenberg's original-equipment sealing technology (including the TransTec transmission repair range, whose components are primarily produced by Freudenberg Sealing Technologies), but sold and marketed specifically for the independent repair channel rather than direct to vehicle assembly lines. This lets Corteco offer broader part coverage — including for older or lower-volume applications — than a typical OE supply contract would require.
Buying guidance
Seals and gaskets are dimension- and material-critical: always match the exact Corteco part number to the application (engine code, transmission type, axle) rather than assuming a "universal" seal will fit, since even small differences in shaft diameter or lip material can cause leaks or premature failure. For transmission repairs, Corteco's TransTec kits are designed to bundle every seal a given rebuild needs in one box, which reduces the risk of missing a smaller, easily overlooked seal. Cabin air filters under the micronAir name should be replaced on the vehicle manufacturer's recommended interval, not only when airflow noticeably drops, since filtration effectiveness degrades gradually.
