A brake is a device that slows or stops a moving vehicle by converting its kinetic energy into heat, most commonly through friction. In cars this is usually done hydraulically: pressing the brake pedal pushes brake pads against a disc, or shoes against a drum, using components such as calipers, pads, discs, drums and a brake booster.
