HELLA: Lighting and Electronics from Lippstadt to FORVIA
HELLA is a German automotive lighting and electronics brand, founded in 1899 in Lippstadt and now the lighting and electronics division of the FORVIA group.
History
HELLA was founded on 11 June 1899 in Lippstadt, Germany, by Sally Windmüller, initially under the name Westfälische Metall-Industrie Aktien-Gesellschaft, producing horns, candles and kerosene lamps for horse-drawn carriages. The HELLA name itself was first registered as a trademark in 1908 for an acetylene headlamp; it is generally said to derive from the nickname of Helene "Hella" Windmüller, the founder's wife. The company grew over the twentieth century into a major supplier of automotive lighting and electronics, remaining headquartered in Lippstadt throughout. In 2021, Faurecia — which had become an independent company after the merger that formed Stellantis — acquired a controlling stake in HELLA; the combined business was rebranded FORVIA in 2022, with HELLA continuing to operate as its lighting and electronics division and its parts still sold under the HELLA name.
What they make
HELLA's core business is vehicle lighting — headlamps, tail lamps, indicators and associated electronics — together with a broad range of vehicle electronics such as sensors, control units and switches. Through joint ventures, HELLA-branded or HELLA-linked parts also extend into other systems: Behr Hella Service, a partnership with Mahle's climate-control business, supplies air-conditioning and engine-cooling parts, giving the brand a presence in thermal management components alongside its lighting and electronics core.
Where they fit — OE vs aftermarket
HELLA is a first-tier original-equipment supplier to a large number of vehicle manufacturers, particularly for lighting and electrical components, and its aftermarket range mirrors that OE production rather than being a separately engineered budget line. This makes it comparable in market position to MANN-FILTER or LEMFÖRDER — a factory-grade part sold through the independent aftermarket rather than a generic reproduction.
Buying tips
For lighting parts especially, exact fitment matters more than with many other component categories, since headlamp and tail-lamp assemblies vary by model year, trim and market, and adaptive or LED lighting systems are not interchangeable with older halogen units. Buyers should match a HELLA part number precisely to the vehicle's lighting or electronic specification rather than assuming a single part fits every version of a given model.
