INA: Schaeffler's Engine and Drivetrain Component Brand

INA is a German engine-component and bearing brand founded in 1946 by brothers Wilhelm and Georg Schaeffler, today the aftermarket brand for engine, timing-drive and cooling-system parts within the Schaeffler Group.

History

INA was established in 1946 in Herzogenaurach, Germany, by brothers Wilhelm and Georg Schaeffler, who started out producing anti-friction bearings in a small workshop. The company's early breakthrough came in 1949, when Georg Schaeffler developed the needle roller and cage assembly, a compact bearing design that reduced friction and space requirements compared with earlier bearing types. The invention found a major early application in 1952, when INA needle roller bearings replaced plain bearings in the Volkswagen Beetle's transmission, an early sign of the automotive industry's importance to the brand. INA grew over subsequent decades into one of the world's leading bearing and precision-component manufacturers. In 1999, INA took over LuK GmbH, a specialist in clutch and torque-converter technology, and around the same period INA and its long-standing rival FAG combined under common ownership; together the three businesses — INA, FAG and LuK — came to form what is known today as the Schaeffler Group, still headquartered in Herzogenaurach and still substantially controlled by the Schaeffler family.

What they make

Within Schaeffler's brand portfolio, INA is the group's brand for engine and drivetrain components, distinct from FAG (industrial and wheel bearings) and LuK (clutch systems). INA's product range covers the timing drive (for both belt- and chain-driven engines), the front-end auxiliary drive — the belt system that runs ancillaries like the alternator and air-conditioning compressor — the valve train, and the engine cooling system. In practice this means INA supplies tensioners, idler pulleys, timing belt and chain kits, water pumps (sold individually and as combined water-pump-and-timing-belt kits), and engine mounts, sold both as individual components and as pre-assembled kits and "GearBOX" sets designed to simplify a full timing-drive service in one purchase.

Where they fit — OE vs aftermarket

INA parts are supplied as original equipment to a large number of vehicle manufacturers worldwide, and the same engineering is carried through to the independent aftermarket under the INA name. Schaeffler supports professional workshops working with INA (as well as its sister brands FAG, LuK and Ruville) through REPXPERT, the group's dedicated technical-service and training brand for the automotive aftermarket, which provides fitting instructions, technical bulletins and diagnostic tools.

Buying guidance

Because timing-drive and cooling-system components are safety- and reliability-critical — a failed timing belt or water pump can cause serious engine damage — always match the INA part number to the vehicle's exact engine code rather than the model name alone, and prefer a complete kit (belt, tensioner and idler, plus water pump where fitted) over replacing a single component, since these parts share a service interval and wear together. Genuine INA packaging carries security features that Schaeffler documents through REPXPERT, worth checking when buying through third-party sellers.
