LEMFÖRDER: ZF's Steering and Chassis Specialist
LEMFÖRDER is ZF Friedrichshafen's steering and chassis brand, tracing back to a single patented ball joint developed in Germany in 1947.
History
LEMFÖRDER was founded in 1947 in the small German town of Lemförde, from which it takes its name, by the engineer Jürgen Ulderup, whose patented design for a suspension ball joint formed the basis of the company. In 1949 the company began producing bonded rubber-to-metal components, vulcanizing rubber directly onto metal parts — a manufacturing process that, alongside ball joints, became central to its chassis and suspension business. LEMFÖRDER grew into a significant supplier of steering and chassis parts to the German motor industry, and in 1984 ZF Friedrichshafen AG took a stake in the company; ZF acquired full ownership in 2003, when the Dr. Jürgen Ulderup Foundation exchanged its remaining 24.4 percent holding in Lemförder Metallwaren AG for a 6.2 percent stake in ZF itself. LEMFÖRDER has operated as a ZF brand ever since.
What they make
LEMFÖRDER specializes in steering and chassis components: ball joints, tie rods, control arms, stabilizer links, rubber-to-metal bushings and similar suspension hardware for passenger cars, as well as chassis technology for motorcycles, heavy commercial vehicles and off-road machinery. It does not cover unrelated systems such as filters or electronics — its range stays focused on the parts that connect a vehicle's wheels to its body and let it steer and absorb road impacts.
Where they fit — OE vs aftermarket
LEMFÖRDER is one of the leading original-equipment suppliers of steering and chassis parts, working directly with more than 50 vehicle manufacturers. As with the other ZF-owned brands (SACHS among them), the aftermarket LEMFÖRDER parts sold through ZF Aftermarket are produced to the same specifications as the components ZF supplies to vehicle assembly lines, rather than being a separate, lower-tier product developed only for resale.
Buying tips
For chassis and steering parts — components where poor tolerances directly affect handling, tyre wear and safety — LEMFÖRDER's OE pedigree is a genuinely relevant factor, since the part a buyer fits is typically the same design that vehicle manufacturers use at the factory. As with any chassis brand, the main practical step is matching the exact part number to the vehicle's suspension variant (standard versus sport suspension, for instance), since visually similar arms or joints are not always interchangeable between trim levels.
