Magneti Marelli is an Italian automotive components brand founded in 1919 as a Fiat joint venture, now the aftermarket parts arm of the Marelli group.

Magneti Marelli: From Fiat Subsidiary to Independent Aftermarket Brand

History

Magneti Marelli was founded in 1919 in Italy as Fabbrica Italiana Magneti Marelli, a joint venture between Fiat and the electrical manufacturer Ercole Marelli, and was based in Corbetta, near Milan. From 1967 the company operated as a subsidiary of Fiat and its successor companies. In 2018, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles agreed to sell Magneti Marelli to CK Holdings, the parent of the Japanese supplier Calsonic Kansei (itself owned by the investment firm KKR), in a deal worth several billion euros; the sale completed and the two companies merged in May 2019 to form a new combined business named Marelli. The Magneti Marelli name was retained specifically for the group's aftermarket parts and services division, which continues to trade as "Magneti Marelli Parts & Services."

What they make

Historically an engineering-led supplier across almost every vehicle system, Magneti Marelli's aftermarket catalogue reflects that breadth: electrical and electronic components, lighting, engine management parts, suspension components including shock absorbers, braking parts, and exhaust systems, among others. The brand is also associated with motorsport electronics, having supplied engine-control and telemetry systems to categories including Formula 1.

Where they fit — OE vs aftermarket

Magneti Marelli built its reputation as a first-tier original-equipment supplier, principally to Fiat/FCA-group brands but also to other manufacturers, and its aftermarket parts are produced from that same OE engineering base rather than as a separately developed budget range. Since the 2019 restructuring, the OE manufacturing business and the aftermarket parts business (still branded Magneti Marelli) sit under the wider Marelli corporate group rather than under Fiat/Stellantis ownership.

Buying tips

Because Magneti Marelli's range spans so many different vehicle systems, its practical reliability varies by category — its electrical and lighting parts benefit most directly from the brand's OE engineering heritage, particularly on Fiat, Alfa Romeo and other historically Fiat-group vehicles, so it is worth checking a part's specific application and vehicle coverage rather than treating the brand as a uniform quality tier across every component type.
