MEYLE: From Hamburg Parts Exporter to Manufacturer

MEYLE is a Hamburg-based, family-owned aftermarket parts brand that grew from a postwar parts-export business into a manufacturer of tens of thousands of its own components.

MEYLE: From Hamburg Parts Exporter to Manufacturer

History

MEYLE traces its roots to 1958, when Wulf Gaertner, recently returned to Germany after living and working in South America, founded Wulf Gaertner GmbH in Hamburg to export German-made original-equipment parts to workshops and distributors abroad. Over the next two decades the business grew steadily, and by 1977 it had a presence in more than 100 markets worldwide as a parts exporter rather than a manufacturer. In 1995, the company acquired the MEYLE brand name and used it to launch its own manufacturing program, moving from purely trading OE-sourced parts to developing and producing its own replacement components. MEYLE remains an owner-operated, privately held family business headquartered in Hamburg, Germany, with a global distribution network.

What they make

Since building out its own manufacturing program, MEYLE has expanded into a broad parts range that now spans tens of thousands of part numbers, covering braking, suspension and steering components, filtration, cooling-system parts, fluids and vehicle electronics. Suspension and steering — control arms, ball joints, tie rods and similar chassis parts — remain a core part of the brand's identity, reflecting its origins as a specialist chassis-parts supplier before it broadened into other systems.

Where they fit — OE vs aftermarket

Unlike LEMFÖRDER, SACHS or MANN-FILTER, MEYLE is not an original-equipment supplier that also sells a retail version of its factory parts — it is, and always has been, an aftermarket-only brand, built by developing its own parts to match or improve on OE specifications rather than by repackaging first-fit production. Over time MEYLE has marketed different quality/durability tiers within its own range (its standard line alongside upgraded, longer-life versions of certain wear parts), a distinction that is specific to MEYLE rather than shared with pure OE-derived brands.

Buying tips

Because MEYLE is an aftermarket specialist rather than an OE supplier, the brand's reputation rests on its own engineering and quality control rather than a factory pedigree — buyers should expect consistent replacement-part quality across a very wide vehicle range, but should check which specific MEYLE line (standard or upgraded) a given part belongs to, since MEYLE itself distinguishes between tiers for parts that are prone to repeat failure, such as certain suspension bushings and links.
