NGK: the Japanese ceramics pioneer now operating as Niterra
NGK Spark Plug was founded in 1936 in Nagoya as a maker of ceramic-based spark plugs, and in 2023 rebranded as Niterra, retaining its position as one of the world's leading spark-plug and sensor suppliers.
History
NGK Spark Plug Co., Ltd. was founded on 11 November 1936 in Nagoya, Japan, with start-up capital of one million yen. Just a year later the young company delivered its first spark plugs. Ceramics were the company's technological core from the outset — a competence NGK consistently developed beyond automotive uses as well: in 1958 it entered the production of ceramic cutting tools and metalworking inserts.
International expansion accelerated in the 1970s: the first European subsidiary was established in the UK in 1975, followed by NGK Spark Plug Deutschland GmbH in Ratingen, Germany, in 1979. The company went public in 1949. In April 2023 it changed its corporate name to Niterra, and in 2021 it had already moved its global headquarters to the N-Forest Building at its Komaki plant in Japan.
What NGK / Niterra makes
Beyond classic spark plugs, the company is known for diesel glow plugs and for oxygen and NOx sensors sold under the NTK brand, one of the leading names in emissions-control sensors. Ceramics remain the common technological thread running through most of the company's products, including those outside the automotive sector.
Buying NGK parts
NGK/Niterra has spent nearly ninety years specialising in essentially one field: precision ceramics designed to survive extreme temperatures and pressures — exactly the operating environment of a spark plug or an exhaust-system sensor. Buying spark plugs, glow plugs, or oxygen sensors under this brand means buying from a company for which these components are a core business rather than a side line, which generally translates into durability and consistency close to factory-fit parts.
