Nissens: A Century of Danish Thermal Management
Nissens is a Danish manufacturer of automotive cooling and air-conditioning components, tracing its history back to a Horsens blacksmith shop founded in 1921 and now operating as part of the American group Standard Motor Products.
History
Nissens was founded in 1921 in Horsens, Denmark, by Jens Nissen, starting out as a small blacksmith workshop. According to the company's own account, the business initially focused on repairing radiators for local garages before moving into manufacturing its own radiators and other cooling-system parts. By the 1950s, Nissens had established itself as a significant radiator supplier in Denmark and continued to broaden its range over the following decades to include air-conditioning components such as compressors and intercoolers. The company built its business primarily around the independent automotive aftermarket in Europe rather than direct factory-fit contracts, and over a century of operation it grew multiple related brands, including AVA (also a cooling and AC parts brand) and Highway Automotive, alongside the main Nissens name. In 2024, Standard Motor Products, a US-listed manufacturer of aftermarket engine-management and temperature-control parts, completed the acquisition of Nissens Automotive, bringing the Danish company into an American ownership structure while it continues to operate from its historic base in Horsens.
What they make
Nissens specializes in thermal management: radiators, condensers, intercoolers, oil coolers, air-conditioning compressors and related engine-cooling and climate-control components. Beyond the automotive aftermarket, the company has also developed cooling solutions for wind-turbine and other industrial machinery applications, extending its thermal-management expertise outside the vehicle sector. Across its family of brands, Nissens states it markets more than 15,000 individual parts.
Where they fit — OE vs aftermarket
Nissens is primarily positioned as an aftermarket brand rather than a factory-line OE supplier, with its reputation built specifically on cooling and climate-control parts for the independent European repair channel — a narrower but deeper specialization than filter or gasket brands that cover many part categories across many vehicle systems.
Buying guidance
Cooling-system parts such as radiators and condensers are especially sensitive to correct fitment because of differences in mounting points, connector types and cooling-capacity ratings between trim levels and engine options on the same model, so always confirm the part against the vehicle's exact engine and, where air-conditioning is involved, refrigerant type. When replacing an air-conditioning compressor, check whether the system needs a full flush and new receiver-drier or accumulator alongside the new part, since Nissens and most other cooling brands specify this as part of correct installation.
