Reading Chinese part numbers: prefixes, suffixes, supersessions
How the numbering works across Chery, Geely and Dongfeng, and why a suffix change matters.
At Chery, the prefix before the dash usually points to the platform or engine family (e.g. 481H for the 1.5 TGDI units), and the digits after it identify the specific component. A letter suffix (e.g. "AA", "BA") marks a design revision — usually interchangeable with the previous one, but not always.
At Geely the numbering is flatter, without a clear platform split, so verifying by VIN is safer than relying on number similarity.
Supersession — the manufacturer replacing an old number with a new one — happens often after a design update. It's worth checking both numbers on a request, since the old one can still be in circulation at European distributors even after the factory has stopped making it.
