History

UFI was established in 1971 in Nogarole Rocca, in the province of Verona, northern Italy, under the name Universal Filter Italiana S.p.A. The company entered the market as one of the first manufacturers of panel-type air filters, a design that was still relatively new to the industry at the time. Through the 1980s and 1990s the group expanded beyond passenger car filtration: in 1981 it set up Sofima, a dedicated aftermarket distribution brand, and in 1992 it moved into hydraulic filtration through Sofima Hydraulics. UFI made its first contacts with the Chinese market in 1983 and, by 1996, had become the first European filtration company to establish a presence there. In 2002 the company was renamed UFI Filters S.p.A., and in 2006 it opened its own Innovation Centre to concentrate research and development. Between the early 2010s and 2020, the group added manufacturing plants in Poland, Brazil, India and Mexico, growing to roughly 19-21 industrial sites and, according to the company, more than 4,000 employees worldwide. UFI remains headquartered in the Verona area, with its main offices now in nearby Porto Mantovano.

What they make

UFI Filters produces air, oil and fuel filters for internal-combustion engines, alongside heat exchangers and thermal management components — an area that has grown in importance with the shift toward hybrid and electric vehicles, where UFI supplies battery cooling modules. The group's Sofima Hydraulics division makes filtration systems for hydraulic and industrial machinery, and UFI also supplies heavy-duty filtration for trucks and off-road equipment. Historically, UFI has been closely associated with motorsport: the company states that its filters are used across Formula 1 and other racing series, and it has also supplied filtration hardware for the European Space Agency's ExoMars mission.

Where they fit — OE vs aftermarket

UFI operates as an original-equipment supplier to a number of vehicle and engine manufacturers, while its Sofima brand is positioned specifically for the independent aftermarket. In practice this means the same engineering and production standards that go into OE filters are also behind the parts sold under the Sofima name to workshops and parts distributors, rather than Sofima being a separate budget-tier product line built to a lower specification.

Buying guidance

When choosing a UFI or Sofima filter, match the part number to your vehicle's exact engine code and production date rather than relying on the model name alone, since filter housings and thread specifications can differ between engine variants of the same car. For hybrid and EV thermal-management components in particular, confirm compatibility against the vehicle's VIN or OE part number, as these systems are less standardized across brands than a conventional oil or air filter.
