Lubricants and grease
- Oils and greases irritate eyes and skin. Avoid long or repeated contact, especially with mineral oils and used oil.
- Used oil can contain harmful substances (it may cause skin cancer). Never use it as a lubricant or for anything that touches skin.
- Wear impermeable gloves and protective clothing, and goggles if eye contact is possible. Do not keep oily rags in your pockets, and change contaminated clothes and shoes.
- Apply a barrier cream before work and wash with soap and water afterwards. Treat open wounds promptly and see a doctor if skin lesions appear.
- Wipe residual grease off components before working on them.
First aid
- Give first aid in line with local regulations; ideally have people with first-aid training at the workplace.
- Eyes: rinse with clean water for at least 10 minutes.
- Skin: wash the affected area with soap and clean water.
- Inhaled fumes: move the person into fresh air; if symptoms persist, get medical help immediately.
- Swallowed liquid: seek medical help and give the doctor the information from the container or label. Do not induce vomiting unless the label says so.
