A steering column is the shaft assembly that connects the steering wheel to the vehicle's steering mechanism, transmitting the driver's turning input to the wheels. Beyond that basic role, it also serves as a mounting point for stalks and switches and, in most cars since the late 1960s, is built to collapse in a controlled way to absorb impact energy in a frontal crash. Many columns also house an anti-theft lock tied into the ignition switch. (Source)
