The compressor is the component of a car's air-conditioning system that draws in low-pressure refrigerant vapor from the evaporator and compresses it to a higher pressure and temperature so it can give up heat in the condenser. It sits in the engine bay and is usually driven off the engine by a belt through an electromagnetic clutch, though some newer variable-displacement or electric-motor-driven compressors run continuously without a separate clutch. This compression step is what keeps the refrigerant cycling and lets the system cool the cabin. (Source)
