A brake drum is the rotating, bowl-shaped metal component that forms the core of a drum brake system, mounted to and turning with the wheel. When the brakes are applied, hydraulic pressure pushes curved brake shoes outward against the inner surface of the drum, and the resulting friction slows the wheel — a self-energizing design in which the drum's own rotation helps intensify the braking force.
