A wheel bearing is a set of roller bearings built into a vehicle's wheel hub assembly, located between the axle and the wheel, that lets the wheel spin smoothly under the load of the vehicle. It is typically pre-pressed into a hub housing along with splined connections that mate with the axle shaft to transmit rotational power to the wheel, and it must be torqued correctly during installation to work safely. Such hub bearing units have been used since at least the 1930s. (Source)
