An automotive alternator is an electric generator that charges the battery and powers the car's electrical systems while the engine is running. It generates alternating current in a stationary stator winding, which is then converted to direct current by a set of diodes, and a voltage regulator adjusts the field current to keep output steady across different engine speeds. Alternators replaced the older DC dynamo generators from around the 1960s onward because they are lighter, more durable and more efficient. (Source)
