A taillight is a red lamp mounted at the rear of a vehicle that lights up whenever the front position lights or headlights are on, making the back of the car visible to following traffic after dark. In many vehicles the same lamp unit doubles as a brake light, glowing brighter when the brakes are applied so other drivers can tell the two functions apart. (Source)
