The water pump, usually of the centrifugal type, is the part of a car's cooling system that forces coolant to circulate through the engine block and cylinder head, where it picks up heat, and on to the radiator. Early cars relied on natural thermosyphon circulation, but this could not move coolant fast enough, so virtually all modern engines rely on a driven centrifugal pump instead. It is typically driven off the engine by a belt. (Source)
