Wiper blades are rubber strips, made of natural rubber, EPDM or similar synthetic compounds, mounted on pivoting metal arms driven by an electric motor. They sweep back and forth across the windscreen to clear rain, snow and debris and keep the driver's view clear. The basic mechanical concept dates back to a 1903 patent by Mary Anderson, among other early inventors, and has since become a standard safety feature on virtually all vehicles. (Source)
