A brake caliper is the housing that holds the brake pads and pistons in a disc brake system, straddling the brake disc. Hydraulic pressure pushes its pistons to press the pads against both sides of the disc — either through opposing pistons in a fixed caliper, or a single piston in a floating caliper that also pulls the caliper body inward — generating the clamping force needed to stop the wheel.
